Sonos Buddy — Support
Last updated 2 October 2026
Sonos Buddy is a native controller for a compatible Sonos system, with a Mac menu-bar app and an iPhone and iPad app. Both releases have been submitted for App Store review.
Getting started
- Open Sonos Buddy on iPhone or iPad. On Mac, click its speaker icon in the menu bar; the controller opens automatically on first launch.
- Choose Connect Sonos on Mac or Connect to Sonos on iPhone and iPad, then sign in with the account that owns your household.
- Select a room at the top, then use Player and Sound to control playback and volume. Open Music to browse Your Library, Apple Music Catalog, Sonos Favorites and Sonos Playlists.
Try it without speakers
Choose Preview controller on the Mac welcome panel or Take a look around on iPhone and iPad. This clearly labeled offline tour uses sample rooms and tracks and sends no commands to speakers. Exit returns to the welcome panel. The is a simplified illustration, not a connection to your Sonos system.
Conversation and mute
Tap the speaker grille to lower the room volume for conversation. Tap again to restore the previous level, unless you adjusted it yourself. Press and hold the grille to mute or unmute. The LED is green during playback, yellow during Conversation and red when muted.
Music, playlists and recommendations
Music has four tabs: For You, Library, Search and Sonos. Allow optional Apple Music access to browse your library and personalized recommendations. Search the catalog, then open artist pages for latest releases, top songs, albums, playlists and similar artists. Catalog-backed songs, albums and playlists play directly using exact Apple catalog identifiers, without linking a favorite first. Artist Play All and Shuffle include every available page of top songs, albums and singles, deduplicated by catalog ID. Top Songs also has its own play-all and shuffle controls.
Apple Music must be connected in Sonos with an active subscription. Direct catalog playback needs the same local network and Local Network permission; a VPN must allow access to the speakers. Uploaded files and some private collections are unavailable. Stations require a matching saved Sonos favorite and cannot queue or shuffle. Sonos Buddy never uses AirPlay or plays on this device. Sonos Favorites and Playlists remain available, with service filters and up to six pinned favorites per household.
Sound and lyrics
Use Sound to adjust volume and bass. Bass requires a compatible speaker on the same Wi-Fi and may request local network access. Seeking, shuffle, repeat and queue actions depend on the source or connection. Show or hide lyrics with the Lyrics control; lyrics are not available for every track.
Mac desktop widgets
Add Sonos Buddy from the macOS widget gallery. The small widget opens the controller; the medium widget also opens a pinned favorite in the app to play it. Information reflects the last app update, and refreshes while the controller is running.
Connection troubleshooting
- If rooms do not appear, check that your Sonos account owns the household and that the speakers are online.
- If Bass cannot reach a speaker, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi and check local network permission in system settings. VPNs and networks that isolate devices may prevent discovery.
- If authorization expires, sign out using the app menu and connect again.
- If Apple Music does not play, check your subscription, the Apple Music connection in Sonos, the selected room and local network access. Library permission does not connect Apple Music to Sonos. VPNs must permit local access. Unsupported items may still be playable through an explicitly linked Sonos favorite; refresh a stale or removed favorite.
