## Choose yarn and colours for knitting

A good colourwork palette starts with contrast. Choose yarns that work together in weight and care, then let a knitted swatch tell you what the screen cannot.

 01

## Start with light and dark

Look at your colours together in daylight. Take a greyscale photo as a quick check: if both yarns become a similar grey, a small motif may be difficult to read. Texture and hue still matter, but a clear difference in value makes a useful starting point.

 02

## Match the yarn to the fabric you want

Compare the recommended gauge, fibre, construction and care instructions. Similar thickness helps the stitches sit together more predictably. Smooth yarn can make a small chart easier to read; a halo, marl or strongly variegated yarn can soften its edges. Knit a sample to decide whether that effect suits your design.

 03

## Change one colour at a time

Keep the background constant while trying different contrast colours. Begin with two colours so the shape stays legible. The free chart maker offers three example palettes; Sashiko’s native Swatch studio supports richer yarn and chart editing.

 04

## Use previews as a planning aid

Screen brightness, lighting, dye lots and fibre all affect colour. Our web previews are illustrations, not calibrated yarn photography or a guarantee of the finished fabric. Check the actual yarns together, then wash and measure a physical sample.

 05

## What about yarn quantity?

A chart’s coloured cells can show the balance between colours, but they cannot give reliable yarn yardage by themselves. Floats, tension, fibre and garment construction change consumption. Follow a complete pattern or measure a representative sample before buying for a larger project.

 A few useful answers

What yarn is best for colourwork? There is no single best yarn for every project. Choose compatible yarn weights and care requirements, clear colour contrast and a fabric you like after washing a sample.

Can I use different yarn brands together? You can test them together when their thickness, gauge and care are compatible. Brand names alone do not establish a match; a washed sample is more useful.

## [Stepped diamond](/sashiko/colorwork-patterns/stepped-diamond)

A small diamond that grows and contracts across six rows. Try it as a border.

## [Little peaks](/sashiko/colorwork-patterns/little-peaks)

An asymmetric mountain line. Repeat it across a band or turn the colours around.
